Poland hosted the U20s round robin this year and apparently playing as hosts makes Poland play worse, who knew. They were in division I but after finishing in last place next year they will have to play in division II. If you are promoted from division I you get to play in the World Junior Championships that run from late December to early January every year.
They had a lead going into the third period against Croatia and managed to give up three goals and that earned them a spot in division II. If the tie breaker were goal differential Croatia would have finished last but it looks like it was head-to-head which is why Poland did not survive. Poland's only win came against Italy, and even that was by a narrow tally of 1-0.
Croatia was the one match Poland definitely should have won, and yet, they found a way to lose it. Way to go.
